Project: Make an Instrument

Students were given the opportunity to explore instruments during our Sound Unit.

One of the projects ... make an instrument with a family member.  Below are examples of

stringed, wind, and chime instruments.  The kids presented a great performance for Mrs. P.

Rhyme within Poetry

Students have been working on poetry for a few weeks.  Recently, we read One Inch Tall by Shel Silverstein and had a blast reciting it.  We used this poem as a foundation for the aabbbcddeeec rhyme stanza.  Below are two poems the class creatively wrote.

In the Forest

I once saw a snail

That was carrying a pail

That was very rare

Then I saw a bear

I hope the snail will take care

When I’m in the forest

Next I spied a fox

It had the chicken pox

I can tell the Fox was very sick

Maybe he ate a stick

But he was still slick

When I’m in the forest

I wish my school had a swimming pool

That would be really cool

The school year is long

We participate in Music with song

Sometimes we do things wrong

I wish the school served donuts and cake

Then we could learn how to bake

Service Project

Third grade finished reading The Chalk Box Kid by Clyde Robert Bulla, last week.  As part of an active project that complimented the story, we planted a flower garden at the main entrance to the School/Church.  The next time your in the area, please stop in and smell the flowers.

Training for the Race for Education

 Mrs. Boehm is having the third graders practice before the big day.

 She has them walk and run laps so that they can build their endurance.

 The boys usually start out STRONG and eventually slow way down.  One had gotten a cramp during our class.  Class, remember exhale and inhale!

 This is our class after a 10 minute practice walk/run.

 Everyone survived and quickly went inside for a refreshing drink from the fountain.

Classroom Field Trip

 DDSO of the Finger Lakes presents "Kids on the Block" to NCS Third Grade Class.  The DDSO players visit area schools teaching students about children with disabilities.  Above is Mark and Jennifer.  Mark has CP ( Cerebal Palsy).  Our third grade students learned that Mark can do wheelies with his Super Duper Crusier (wheelchair) and that he has very strong arms.  Jennifer had lots of questions for Mark, like how do get into a car and how do you go to the bathroom?

 Melody is waiting for her mom and doesn't know what time it is.  She asks Renoldo for the time.  He touches his watch and tells her it is 2:30pm.  Melody is really curious.  How did Renoldo tell time by touching his watch.  Renoldo tells Melody that he is blind and his watch has raised dots that help him tell time.  One of our students asked Renoldo how does he know what color shirt he is wearing and can he tell if his shirt is on backwards?  Renoldo explained that his mom has made clothing labels with raised dots (Braille) for his shirts and pants.  She has sown them onto the collar and waist band of his pants so that he can tell the color and which is front and back.

 One of the DDSO players demonstrates three signs... stand, sit and jump.  Then she had the students practice the signs.  The students practiced the signs and then followed the ques that were given.  The kids had a lot of fun jumping in our classroom.  Something that is rarely done.

 Jennifer catches up with Jessica. Jessica is feeling a little down because she can't remember all the steps to her dance for the talent show.  Jennifer notices that Jessica has her shoes on the wrong feet.  Jessica tells Jennifer that she has trouble remember her right from her left, she mixes up b's and d's, p's and q's, however, she is really good at math.  Jennifer has a learning disability.  She gets extra help at school from a resource teacher who is teaching her strategies that will help her remember things that we all need to learn.  One of student asked Jessica if she mixes up her m's and w's. 

Third grade students were very attentive to the DDSO players and asked some very good questions.  Parents, ask your child to teach you the three signs they learned from our visitors.

Poetry

Third Grade has begun diving into poetry.  We read a few of Constance Levy's poems from SPLASH!  Poems about Water.  Enjoy our creative voices.

Rain, Dance
The rain dance is step by step.
Right and left all over.
Feel the flow of the rain dance.
Step by step.
The rain steps onto the ground and dances every time.
